The broadband revolution is upon us. When it comes right down to
it, broadband to the home is a technology whose time has come. What
remains to be seen is whether the broadband network will take the
path of offering just speed, or addressing other customer needs
as well. The phenomenal growth of broadband, 21 million subscribers
projected for year end 2001 growing to approximately 84 million
by 2005, is a direct result of increasing reliance on the Internet
as an information, communications, business
and entertainment tool. At the same time, new bandwidth intensive
applications are being introduced that make the argument for broadband
services very compelling.
"The Broadband
Marathon: Access Technologies Jockey for Subscribers" examines
the status of broadband access technologies, focusing in particular
on DSL, cable modems, fixed wireless, and satellite broadband services.
The report discusses each technology and provides forecasts for
worldwide broadband data subscribers and revenues through 2005.
