The Western European mobile phone market is increasingly being
dominated by seven groups - Vodafone Group, T-Mobil International,
Orange, Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM), Telefónica Móviles,
KPN Mobile and British Telecom (BT) Wireless. These groups and the
Nordic operators, Sonera, Telenor and Telia, are moving to dominate
the mobile Internet market, positioning themselves as mobile Internet
service providers, supplying an increasing range of content, largely
through partnership deals, and establishing pan-European mobile
portals. Independent service providers and content providers face
a tough time against this competition.
The much-hyped launch of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) services
has had a rocky start, but the mobile operators remain optimistic.
Cahners In-Stat Group estimates that there were 5.8 million WAP
users in Western Europe at the end of 2000. Content is steadily
being improved and the launch of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS),
with its always-on facility, is hoped to overcome the problems of
slow connection time and download associated with the early WAP
service. However, the launch of GPRS is being delayed and this will
impact the WAP market. This report reviews the status of WAP and
2.5G services, including GPRS, HSCSD and EDGE, in Western Europe.
The report includes WAP subscriber forecasts and carrier profiles.
