Wireless Applications Infrastructure: WASPs Demand for IT Infrastructure & Services, 2001-2005

Service: Online Computing Infrastructure
Report Number: OE01-04IN
Publication Date: October 2001
Number of Pages: 36
Report Price: $2,995 USD

This report provides an overview of the emerging Wireless-enabled Application Service Provider (W-ASP) market, including a look into their back-end infrastructure. The report provides detailed 5-year forecasts of expenditures of these service providers on the IT products, personnel and services needed to provision their wireless-accessible hosted applications business, in addition to a discussion of primary computing platforms and wireless-enablement solutions used in 2001 and expected to be used in 2002.

Currently, the majority of W-ASP solutions are rooted in proprietary architectures. Given that wireless connectivity is still an emerging market, it is not unusual to find these types of proprietary point solutions in place. It is difficult to anticipate just when a technology will take hold, sometimes it never does. If there is a high barrier to entry and no pull for the technology, it can fizzle out of favor or get relegated to specific niche markets, leaving room for just a few players. In other cases, one vendor’s solution may gain the greatest acceptance across the broadest audience, and thereby become the defacto standard, but still remain proprietary. Again, in other cases, more open standards may emerge and become embedded into existing applications, operating systems or devices, which eliminates the need for proprietary point solutions.
