Global PC TV Tuners—A Solid Niche In Transition

Demand for PC-TV Tuners has turned down since 2008, due to the worldwide recession. The market faces fundamental issues. People get lots of video from their broadband Internet, and mobile video services will change the playing field.

Digital-only PC-TV Tuners cost less than Hybrid tuners. As developed countries move toward all-digital TV services, the retail value of the total PC-TV Tuner market will slow down, even while unit shipments of Digital-only PC-TV tuner products goes up.

New competitors are moving from cellular handset video markets into the PC-TV Tuner space specializing in very high levels of integration.

PC-TV Tuner vendors are expecting a boost with Microsoft's Windows 7.

Facing flat demand, the traditional vendors are wondering if their PC-TV Tuner business is going to remain viable. As the market shifts from a combination of analog and digital broadcast technologies to digital-only broadcasts, the margins currently available for hybrid tuners will be marginalized by lower cost digital-only tuners.

We expect that the worldwide PC-TV Tuner market may have peaked in value during 2008, at about US$ 1.4 billion. The economic downturn is expected to cause a revenue decline of about 15% during 2009, and we expect single-digit growth for 2010.

Digital TV 2008: Shipments Increase While Revenues Flatten in Worldwide Market

The market for television sets is rapidly switching from analog to digital as broadcasters in North America, Western Europe, and Japan near government-mandated analog-to-digital switchover dates. However, the large consumer market in China is only at the beginning of the digital switchover while India is still discussing plans to make the switch.

Television set manufacturers are beginning to add new connectivity features to television sets, which will serve to maintain the television’s role as the center of household entertainment. These features include: direct Internet connectivity, with content offered through set manufacturer services; wireless network connectivity, which will let consumers connect to networked cable boxes, computers, gaming devices, PVRs, and DVD players. In addition, television manufacturers are now working with US cable companies to include next-generation tru2way two-way CableCard direct cable connection features on televisions marketed in the US.

This report additionally looks at prospects for the replacement of "can" television tuners with silicon tuners, which are expected to begin appearing in television sets beginning in 2009. It reviews what manufacturers are doing in these areas and then analyzes consumer attitudes toward these new connectivity options. It then forecasts growth of digital television shipments, by screen type and by region, through 2012.

Worldwide PC-TV Tuners: Driven by Digital Broadcasting

The market for PC-TV Tuners is quickly moving from analog to digital, driven by the increased pace of the broadcast television analog-to-digital switchover. In 2005, 60.1% of PC-TV Tuners shipped were analog, but the analog tuner market share dropped to 48.3% in 2006, and then to 39.7% in 2007.

During this same three year time period, digital broadcast television coverage spread rapidly in Western Europe and in the key Asian markets of Korea and Japan. These are markets with a strong tradition of watching over-the-air television programming rather than the premium services offered by Cable and Satellite television services.

The adoption of digital PC-TV Tuners will accelerate in Europe as Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) services continue to expand. In Asia, China and India will present strong growth opportunities. North America is expected to see a surge during 2009, when analog TV is cut off, and new Mobile Digital Terrestrial TV (MDTV) services are introduced by major US TV stations.

PC-TV Tuners face challenges from a variety of other options that consumers have for obtaining video on their PCs, including easy-to-use Cable, TelcoTV, and satellite TV services, Internet distributed video content, IPTV services, and mobile broadband, such as 3G, Wi-Fi, and WiMAX.

World Report on Digital Satellite Set-Top Boxes

The pay direct-to-home (DTH) industry is characterized by two broad growth patterns: maturing markets with decaying rates and high growth/emerging markets. Mature markets like those in North America and Western Europe stand in relative stark contrast to regions like Asia and Eastern Europe, where the markets are just emerging.

Both North America and Western Europe have relatively few pay-TV platforms—often a “duopoly” or “monopoly” prevails. This is in contrast to countries like Romania, which currently has five DTH providers, which paints differing growth prospects. In mature markets growth will come from premium services (HD and DVR/PVR) while emerging/high growth markets will experience a period of relatively robust subscriber acquisition likely followed by consolidation and a gradual decay in the growth rate. The emerging/high growth markets, by and large, will mirror, to some extent, the progression taken by the mature markets.

Worldwide Market for IP Set-Top Boxes

The IP set-top box market growth is reliant upon growth in telco TV subscribers. Since we saw a large jump in subscribers and deployments of telco TV in 2007, the IP set-top box market almost doubled.

Declines in component pricing will enable lower ASPs for IP set-top boxes each year. By 2010, the bill of materials will be less than US$50.
The report includes worldwide five-year unit shipment, ASP, and revenue forecasts through 2012 for IP set-top boxes divided into six geographic regions: North America, Latin America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Middle East/Africa, and Asia/Pacific. Five-year forecasts are also provided for IP set-top boxes with specific features like DVR, HD, and digital TV tuners. Those worldwide forecasts are divided into the aforementioned geographic regions.
