US Holiday Spending on Consumer Electronics

Consumer electronic (CE) products continue to top holiday wish lists, which is good news for CE manufacturers and suppliers alike. In-Stat surveyed its own Technology Adoption Panel about the different CE products they will purchase this holiday season, and received 1,352 responses to this survey. For the third year in a row, high definition televisions (HDTVs) ranked as the most desired CE product for the holiday season. Other top CE products were laptop PCs, digital cameras, Blu-ray players, and desktop PCs.

The percentage of respondents who will not purchase a CE product this year has risen since the first iteration of this survey in 2006. This year, 34% of respondents will not purchase a CE product. This compares with 19% of respondents in 2006 and 2007, and 24% in 2008. This suggests that the economic slump will continue to impact consumers’ purchase behaviors for the 2009 holiday season.

This research includes the following:
-Top 5 CE product categories targeted for purchase this holiday, for 2007, 2008, and 2009
-Product purchase influencers and reasons for purchase
-Targeted brands
-Planned spend

Products covered include HDTVs, PCs (desktop and laptop), digital cameras, personal navigation devices, digital photo frames, portable media players, mobile phones, and e-readers.

PNDs: Worldwide Shipments Grow Despite Increased Competition from GPS-Enabled Handsets

The personal navigation device (PND) market is maturing as prices decline, consolidation occurs, and shipment growth slows; the most looming threat is the rapidly growing GPS-enabled mobile phone market.

Still, PND shipments will continue due to affordable price points for the mass market, car manufacturers’ desire to offer cheap navigation options, and the potential growth in connected PNDs. Yet, due to the weak economy’s impact on consumer spending, demand for these higher-priced connected PNDs has yet to take off. In-Stat expects that if the costs to incorporate a cellular modem decrease, there will be a stronger opportunity for connected PNDs.

Meanwhile, PND manufacturers should explore ways to participate in the GPS-enabled mobile handset market. GPS-enabled mobile handsets are expected to grow 26% between 2009 and 2010, and reach almost 700 million units by 2013.

In-Stat’s recent PND research offers forecasts for global and regional PND shipments, worldwide revenue, and average selling prices. A bill of materials analysis, as well as silicon and non- silicon revenue opportunities are discussed. Finally, a worldwide forecast of GPS-enabled handsets is offered.

Worldwide PMP/MP3 Player Shipments Plateau as Market Succumbs to Competition From Emerging Connected Device Segments

Not so long ago, the PMP/MP3 player market was one of the fastest-growing segments in the portable consumer electronic (CE) industry, with Apple as the runaway leader with its successful iPod lineup. Today, the market is facing a serious slowdown as Apple shifts its focus to its illustrious iPhone, and as iPhone-like competitors pop up.

PMP/MP3 player shipments will reach 225 million worldwide by the end of 2009, up only 5% from 2008. Manufacturers are scrambling to encourage sales by adding enhanced features, like touchscreens and support for Wi-Fi.

Nevertheless, the PMP/MP3 player market has reached saturation due to waning consumer demand, a poor economic environment, and competition from emerging Internet-connected CE segments, such as audio/video-capable smartphones and mobile Internet devices (MIDs).

In-Stat's latest research on the global PMP/MP3 player market includes forecasts for unit shipments and revenues out to 2013. Regional splits for unit shipments, as well as expectations for growth in Wi-Fi enabled PMPs, are included. New to this research is a bill of materials analysis and the total silicon revenue opportunity for suppliers to the global PMP market.

Wi-Fi Represents Strongest Opportunity in Global Connected Digital Photo Frame Market

Worldwide shipments of digital photo frames will reach 25 million units by the end of 2009, and grow to 50 million units by 2013 due to affordable price points, consumer demand for multimedia support, Internet connectivity, and the market’s "gift-giving" status.

The digital photo frame market has segmented based on functionality. Single-function frames only display photos. Multimedia frames display digital photos and support a variety of music and video formats. Advanced digital photo frames support image, music and video playback, but also incorporate wireless Internet connectivity. Internet connectivity will be a key differentiator for digital photo frame manufacturers, and these companies now have a number of wireless options to choose from.

In-Stat’s latest research, Wi-Fi Represents Strongest Opportunity in the Global Connected Digital Photo Frame Market (#IN0904506ID), provides a specific forecast on the Wi-Fi vs. cellular opportunity. Wireless Delivery of Digital Content Propels E-Book Adoption

The hot, new topic in the consumer electronics (CE) world is the electronic book (e-book). Worldwide e-book shipments are expected to reach 28.6 million units in 2013. Market drivers include new entrants to market, international expansion of e-book availability, anticipated price declines, and the electronic distribution of newspapers.

Online retail giant, Amazon, is emerging as the leader in the e-book market with its Kindle lineup. The key to Amazon’s success is its content delivery service. The company has partnered with cellular network operator, Sprint, to enable Kindle users to wirelessly download digital e-book content directly to the Kindle via the Sprint EVDO network. It is this seamless content-to-hardware delivery experience that is driving Amazon's popularity in the e-book market.

This report provides a comprehensive view of e-book shipments, sales revenue, average selling prices, and expectations for wireless-enabled e-books. An analysis of e-book bill of materials and the total semiconductor revenue opportunity is included, as well. Five-year forecasts are provided for all factors.

Worldwide Demand for Digital Radio Continues to Rise

Consumer confidence is at its weakest point in over a decade; nevertheless the worldwide market for digital radio experienaced year-over-year growth of 85% between 2007 and 2008. A major factor driving this growth was the progress in digital multimedia broadcast (DMB) service in Korea and China.

Another primary driver for digital radio market growth was further developments in the HD radio market, such as the introduction of portable HD radio receivers. Also, the merger between XM and Sirius did not deter demand for satellite radio receivers in the US. Outside the US, digital audio broadcasting (DAB) technology is the leading form of digital radio technology, and has reached mass-market status within the UK.

The global market for satellite and terrestrial digital radio, combined, will grow from 12 million unit shipments in 2007, to 55 million unit shipments in 2012. Additional market drivers include falling receiver prices, an increase in the amount of digital programming, significant boosts in the promotion and advertising of digital radio, and the enhanced functionality of digital radio receivers.

In-Stat's latest report on the digital radio market offers worldwide unit shipment and revenue forecasts for digital radio receivers. A forecast for US satellite radio subscribers is also included.

Despite Slowing Console Sales, Online Gaming Subscriber Growth Continues Worldwide

The game console business is extremely costly, and coupled with a dismal economy, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony each have turned to online gaming to generate additional revenue. Clearly, in order to take advantage of online gaming, consumers must own a game console. While game console shipments are entering a decline, subscription growth to online game services is expected to occur as a result of the sizable video game console installed base and a growing consumer awareness and comfort with online gaming. From 2005 to 2013, annualized growth of console and handheld subscribers combined will be 20.4%.

In-Stat’s latest gaming report contains forecasts for online game subscribers annually through 2013 for online-capable game console and handheld consoles. Forecasts for each console include an annual console installed base, the number of subscribers (free or paid), subscription revenue, paid download revenue, and online advertising revenue. This report does not forecast PC online gaming or casual gaming. Analyses are provided for the online console strategies of Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony, as well as the online handheld strategies of Nintendo and Sony.

US Consumers' Attitudes and Behaviors Toward Digital Photo Frames

Portable, multimedia applications often represent strong revenue opportunities for suppliers to and manufacturers of consumer electronic (CE) products. Some of these applications include multimedia smartphones, personal navigation devices, and handheld gaming devices. In-Stat believes there is another portable, multimedia application that represents a potential growth opportunity for traditional CE companies: digital photo frames that are used primarily to showcase digital photos in a slideshow mode.

In order to find out what US consumers are thinking about digital photo frames, In-Stat fielded a survey to its proprietary Technology Adoption Panel (TAP) in November 2008 regarding their attitudes and behaviors toward digital photo frames. The survey yielded 1,549 respondents, of which 498 respondents, or 32%, owned a digital photo frame. As with most CE products, consumer demand is one of the primary drivers for the development of new products in the digital photo frame market. In addition, consumer perspectives about these devices often affect retailer availability.
In-Stat’s latest In-Sight includes demographic results for current digital photo frame owners, as well as those who plan to purchase a digital photo frame in the coming year. This research also includes data on brands that will be purchased, price points consumers are willing to pay, and reasons for digital photo frame purchases.

The Worldwide PMP/MP3 Player Market: Shipment Growth to Slow Considerably

Worldwide PMP/MP3 player unit shipments reached 200 million in 2007, and will grow to 245 million in 2012. However, the year-over-year growth rate will slow considerably over this time frame, and actually dip below 10% by the end of 2008 for the first time since the market's inception. This slowdown in shipments demonstrates the market's maturity, as well as the competitive impact the market now faces from multimedia cellphones, like the Apple iPhone.

In order to mitigate the impact from both maturation and competition, today's PMP/MP3 player manufacturers are introducing products with enhanced functionality; and the most notable feature addition consumers are starting to demand is Wi-Fi capability. In-Stat estimates that approximately 21% of PMP/MP3 players will be Wi-Fi-enabled in 2012.

In-Stat's latest report on the global PMP/MP3 player market includes worldwide forecasts for unit shipments and revenues. Regional split for unit shipments are also included. The report provides a forecast breakout for audio-only MP3 players, as well as expectations for growth in the video-enabled PMP market. The newest addition to this research is a worldwide forecast for Wi-Fi enabled PMPs throughout 2012.

2008 US Holiday Spending on Consumer Electronics

For the third year in a row, In-Stat fielded a survey to its proprietary Technology Adoption Panel (TAP) of US-based consumers in order to learn the top five consumer electronic (CE) products respondents were considering for purchase at the holiday season.

It is clear that we are in economic turmoil in the US. In this latest survey (n = 1,593), 24.1% of respondents do not plan to purchase a CE product at the holiday season. This compares to two years ago when 19.4% of respondents (n = 1,193) had no plans to purchase a CE product at the holiday season.

Nevertheless, the majority of respondents are still planning to spend money on consumer electronics during the 2008 holiday season. High-definition televisions (HDTVs), once again, top the list at the most desired CE product. Personal computers (PCs), digital cameras, Blu-ray players, and personal navigation devices (PNDs) follow HDTVs. Suppliers and manufacturers in the CE industry can benefit from this research by learning which CE segments have stayed on consumers' wish lists at the holiday season over the years, and how the mix of segments has shifted.

The Worldwide Personal Navigation Device Market Update

Shipments of personal navigation devices (PNDs) will continue to grow over the next five years. Key drivers for PND market growth include falling price points, increased worldwide consumer demand, and enhanced functionality in new PND models.

Still, the PND market faces strong competition from both handset navigation and embedded automotive navigation systems. In particular, vendors in handset navigation are starting to offer a number of value-add services, such as pedestrian navigation, offline navigation, and searches for local points of interest.

In-Stat's latest industry update offers a revised PND forecast that takes into account market developments that occurred in the second half of 2007 and the first half of 2008. It also provides a regional breakout for PND shipments. Competitive threats such as in-car navigation and GPS-enabled handsets are discussed. For more detailed information about PND manufacturers, component suppliers, and products, look for In-Stat’s full-length PND and location-based services report, due to be published in the fall of 2008.

Continued Growth in the Worldwide Market for Portable, Electronic-Based Edutainment Toys

Today’s child is incredibly comfortable using technology. As a result, young children now represent a key target demographic for digital consumer electronic (CE) products. There are a number of children’s toys on the market today that incorporate digital technology. In fact, one of the fastest growing segments in the overall toy industry is the edutainment market. Edutainment toys aim to educate while they entertain, and sophisticated digital technology, such as 3D graphics and wireless capability, is now being incorporated into edutainment toys.

The worldwide market for edutainment toys reached $2.35 billion in 2007. In-Stat expects this figure to reach $9 billion by 2012. The growth in the edutainment toy segment is taking place as the costs of microprocessors and memory chips drop significantly. In-Stat believes that semiconductor companies now have an opportunity to leverage existing, portable multimedia solutions in order to power products found in the price-sensitive edutainment toy market.

In-Stat’s latest report includes worldwide forecasts for unit shipments, average sales price, and revenues for electronic-based, edutainment toys. It offers company profiles for the leading edutainment toy manufacturers, such as LeapFrog and VTech, and provides a composite semiconductor forecast for a typical edutainment toy on the market today.

The Revolution WILL be Televised—Directly to Your Handheld!

This presentation is a re-enactment of the keynote speech given by In-Stat analyst Gerry Kaufhold at ARC International’s ConfigCon Silicon Valley 2007. It includes slides along with an audio recording of analyst commentary.

The presentation explores how low-power, high-performance semiconductors are creating a revolution that brings high-quality video, audio, music and information directly into users’ hands and how the user experience of today’s portable market is quickly outpacing what traditional service providers can deliver. It also debunks the widespread notion that consumers have to wait for the broadcast TV networks and movie studios to get “on board” with electronic delivery before the market will really blossom. Forecasts for WiFi “hotspots”, WiMAX devices, and four categories of portable devices are included.
