Smartphone and Handset Operating Systems in Europe

The European market for smartphones is alive and dynamic. As network operators have continued to build out wireless networks with increased bandwidth and as the mobile voice and text market has become saturated, the market has become increasingly ready for devices, such as smartphones, which can be used to meet the unique requirements of individual consumers.

Network operators are cooperating. Having spent billions of Euros to build out these faster networks, they are beginning to realize that consumers want to use applications and services of their own choosing rather than simply relying on operator offerings. Additionally, network operators are now lowering data rates in order to attract the subscribers who will use these networks.

The smartphone market in Europe is increasingly oriented toward the consumer, which will help the market grow at a CAGR of 11% through 2012. This report provides an overview of these and other forces at work.

Japan Market Ready for Multimedia and Smartphones

Smartphones—those that allow their users to add applications and services of their choosing—have been relegated to the enterprise segment where a few businesses have adopted and developed their own applications. However, pressures to reduce high handset subsidies and extend the life of existing handsets may result in Japan being friendlier to smartphones.

Symbian and Linux enjoy the highest penetration in the Japanese smartphone market and appear to be the beneficiaries in any expansion of smartphone use there.

This research also includes findings from a survey of 1,000 Japanese mobile subscribers about their use and interest in multimedia handsets and services. Three quarters of respondents have multimedia-capable phones, but most do not use those functions. Only 10% would be willing to pay for the multimedia capabilities in their next phones.

This research will be valuable for companies that provide smartphones, multimedia phones, and mobile handset applications or any of the components and semiconductors used in high-end handsets for the Japan market.

India Wants Full-Featured Cellphones

The emerging category of "ultra low-cost handset" (ULCH) is seen as a key component in attracting the "next billion" mobile phone subscribers into the market. Ultra low-cost handsets are expected to be stripped-down cellphones offering only the most basic communication experience of voice and text messaging.

However, In-Stat has found in a survey of Indians who are likely to purchase a low-cost handset that urban residents of major Indian cities show a strong preference for cellphones with features. Fully one-third of the respondents to this survey say that they would not even consider a basic handset equipped with only voice and SMS capability.

The ultra low-cost handset may, indeed, be the way to bring the next billion users to cellular, but lower-cost and refurbished cellphones should be considered as an important way to expand cellphone usage in developing countries, especially those countries where users have already experienced cellphone ownership and enjoyed the benefits of advanced features.

Companies developing or marketing cellphones in India will need the in-depth insights about Indian consumers who expect to pay less than US$75 for a cellphone. This research provides analysis and survey data taken from over 1,000 respondents that includes income, demographics, preferred handset brands, and features and interest in purchasing ultra low-cost handsets.

2007 Global Handset Market Forecast

There have been several changes in the mobile handset market since the previous forecast was released (2006 Global Handset Market Forecast, #IN0602919WH, December 2006). Both the high and low ends of handset pricing have become more important. At the high end of the market, the Apple iPhone hit the US market in June and will soon be available in Europe; elsewhere, vendors continue to develop low-cost and ultra-low-cost phones for emerging markets.

-Worldwide handset shipments are expected to increase to 1.46 billion by 2012, driven in part by increasing availability of low-cost and ultra-low-cost handsets in emerging nations.
-Total handset revenues will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 1.7% to a total of US$165.4 billion by 2012.
-Third-generation (3G) handsets will represent half of the worldwide revenue for cellular handsets.

Smartphones 2007: The ARPU Generation Machine

Smartphones are the most dynamic and interesting segment among mobile devices. They also are the fastest growing and lead to the most profit for wireless operators, manufacturers, and applications developers.

Experienced users and businesses are moving to this technology as entry level hardware prices drop. Smartphone users are experiencing significant value from their smartphones. As a result, they are downloading more applications and generating higher ARPUs.

While the segment will grow, it will not be evenly distributed among the six smartphone operating systems currently in use, nor is the growth of any OS predestined to succeed. Each has a very different approach to serving this market segment and there are many potential pitfalls.

The greatest factors for success are to have a vibrant developer ecosystem and effective standards committees. This report identifies the merits of these plans and closely examines the US market for smartphones.

Worldwide Handset Semiconductor Forecast, 2006-2012

Semiconductor components in handsets are the largest semiconductor market in the world by volume, if not in total revenue. Because handset semiconductors are produced in such high volumes, there are very strong price pressures in this market to keep prices low, but, at the same time, cellular service providers always want the latest features in their handsets so that they can continue to attract new subscribers. This conflict between cost and the latest features makes it even more difficult for handset semiconductor manufacturers and handset manufacturers to know what feature mix to pursue.

This report was created with this problem in mind, as it includes the results of a primary research study about what cellular features subscribers are looking for in their handsets, in addition to forecasts for both core and feature semiconductors in handsets. The report contains worldwide forecasts for Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi, cameras, and mobile TV tuners and demodulators, including units, ASPs, and revenues. In addition, this report contains units, ASPs, and revenues, forecasted by phone technology, for a handset's core chipset. Functional breakouts of revenue are also included for power management, audio, SRAM, Flash, analog/digital baseband, and IF/RF sections.

3G Handset Trends in South Korea

South Korea has one of the most advanced wireless services and device markets in the world. In South Korea, all three mobile operators—SK Telecom, Korea Telecom Freetel (KTF), and LG Telecom—have adopted CDMA technology and have already migrated to a high-speed CDMA200-1X EV-DO network. Based on the advanced network infrastructure, comprehensive value-added services, including mobile banking, mobile finance transactions, mobile wallet, multimedia and location-based services, have all been introduced and are well accepted among Korean mobile users.

To cater to diversified customer demand, as of April 2007, the combined offering of SK Telecom, KTF, and LG Telecom included more than 500 phone models. With information available for 473 of them, this report analyzes the adoption of various functionalities on mobile phones in the South Korean market.

Korean cellular operators are continuously exploring better revenue possibilities associated with emerging technologies. WiBro, the Korea version of WiMAX, has been in commercial service since 2006. KTF and SK Telecom are building an HSDPA network in addition to their existing CDMA infrastructure. The switch from CDMA to WCDMA/HSDPA provides a better foundation for operators to expand their data business, as well as new opportunities for domestic handset makers and content providers to go international.

Big Trends in Future Cellphones 2007-2012

The years, 2007–2012, will provide handset vendors and component suppliers with opportunities to reshape consumers' understanding of mobile devices, mobile computing, and mobile connectivity, adding to the virtuous cycle that expands the number of users and usage of mobile networks.

Predicting the make up of future mobile phones requires an understanding of the factors having the greatest influence on customer demand and operator requirements. Our research has identified four key factors that we expect will shape handsets in the coming five years. Those factors are:

- The Apple iPhone
- Alternative networks, such as Wi-Fi and WiMAX
- Mobile video and television
- Increasing corporate-liable subscriptions

These influences will have a powerful effect on the design of mobile devices, as well as the semiconductors and applications used in them.

3G Handset Trends in Japan

Based on an analysis of the 3G phones introduced in fiscal year 2006 into the Japanese cellular phone market, and research of the leading edge service offerings of DoCoMo, KDDI, and Softbank, this report provides data to understand the successes and issues in the world’s leading 3G country.

98 3G phones were launched in Japan in fiscal year 2006.

-68 were with 2.4 to 3.0-inch screens; 92 were with QVGA or higher resolution. The large displays are for multimedia, rich-content surfing, and multitasking on phones.
-Operators strived to generate revenue by providing large-size-attachment emailing and integrated mobile Internet-music player interfaces to push mobile data services based on camera and music functions.
-49 phones were mobile wallet phones and 45 were GPS phones. The convenience and usefulness of mobile wallet payment and navigation services are gaining acceptance among customers and providing substantial business opportunities for operators, device makers, content providers, and others participating in the value system.
-19 models supported “1Seg” mobile TV broadcasting in Japan. The limited models available are not due to the higher cost, but because of an unclear business model for operators to make significant revenue from the free-to-air TV broadcasting service.

Getting to know all of the enticing features of the latest Japanese phones and how their business works will be useful in creating or duplicating the same success in other markets.

Worldwide Demand for Wi-Fi/Cellular Combo Phones

Cellphones have been available now for over 20 years, and as more and more competitors enter the cellphone market, manufacturers of phones have been involved in a quest to differentiate themselves from the others and include as much technology in their handsets as possible. Several years ago, after handsets started adopting cameras and Bluetooth, the first handsets incorporating Wi-Fi started to appear. Most of these Wi-Fi/cellular handsets were either GSM or WCDMA phones, and most still are today, but a few CDMA phones have taken on Wi-Fi as well.

Once a few handsets started appearing with Wi-Fi in them, it wasn’t long before the idea of combining Wi-Fi and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) came along, and this was a very natural evolution in a cellular handset, as voice was and remains the "killer application." Some handsets started to employ SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) which was an open standard that some VoIP providers have incorporated. Other handsets started adopting another standard which is also built on SIP called UMA (Universal Mobile Access). UMA incorporates SIP but also adds on other modifications so that the handset can seamlessly roam between a VoIP network and a cellular network.

Achieving Profitability in the Indian Wireless Market

As one of the fastest growing wireless markets in the world, the wireless subscriber base in India has witnessed exponential growth since the year 2000. The total subscriber number is expected to reach 265.2 million and generate total revenue of US$17.5 billion by 2010.

However, the ARPU levels have declined significantly and the downward trend in ARPU levels is expected to continue. The ARPU is expected to decline from US$7.6 in 2005 to US$5.6 in 2010, due to extensive competition and lower disposable income of new users.

This report is to analyze the profitability of the players in this market with the current information we have. We have put together the cost structure for mobile operators and tried to find out whether this low APRU model could lead to the profitability of these operators.

In-Depth Analysis: Cellular Modem Worldwide Shipment Forecast 2003-2011

Cellular PC modems for laptop computers have existed for several years, but it wasn't until cellular 3G networks were launched worldwide that shipments of the devices really start to grow. In 2006, In-Stat expects over 5 million of these devices to be shipped worldwide, and in latter years, this number will only grow.

In 2005, another type of cellular modem appeared. This modem is the embedded cellular modem that several laptop manufacturers have started offering as an option. While initially these modems were quite expensive, prices should drop quickly once volumes increase.

This cellular modem report covers both embedded cellular modems in laptop computers, as well as external modem cards typically used in laptops. Data in the report includes market shares by card manufacturer, as well as forecasts through 2011 for modem cards, modem card revenue, wireless data subscribers using modem cards, and cellular wireless data service revenue. The report also contains service pricing for a number of large cellular carriers, worldwide.
