SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., March 19, 2001 - A Q4 2000 decrease in revenue and unit shipments in the broadband modem market is indicative of broad economic slowdown, according to Cahners In-Stat Group (http://www.instat.com). The high-tech market research firm finds that the volume of both analog and modem shipments fell in Q4 as a result of a decline in both consumer and OEM purchases. While unit shipments declined, revenue decreases were even more drastic as the Average Selling Price (ASP) continued to deteriorate. As a result, the modem market saw several mergers and the exit of several companies.

"Slowing in PC shipments translated to reductions in bundled analog modem shipments," says Amy Helland, Industry Analyst for In-Stat's LAN and Enterprise Communications Group. "Notebook modem form factors (PC Cards and Combo Cards) also suffered significant decreases, with shipments falling more significantly than for shipment of desktop modem form factors. Slowdown for PC Card and Combo Cards is partially a factor of overall PC shipment slowdown as well as cannibalization from Mini-PCI form factors."

In-Stat also found that:

  • Alcatel captured the greatest market share gain for DSL Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) shipments. 3Com also enjoyed a significant gain in cable CPE market share for Q4 00, moving from 10 percent to 19 percent.
  • 4Q 2000 exhibited major transitions in the analog modem market as US Robotics replaced 3Com as the dominant player after 3Com released the analog-only products to US Robotics.
  • ADSL CPE shipment degradation was much less severe quarter to quarter as compared to cable modem shipments. ADSL declined by less than 1 percent, where cable declined 13 percent from Q3 00 to Q4 00. This is the first quarter since cable modems were released that shipment levels fell. The decline in cable modem shipments was largely a result of the high inventory levels held by MSOs.

The report, Analog and Digital Modem Quarterly (#CQ0101M7), includes market share information for analog and digital modems. Market share is provided for unit shipments and revenue by technologies and form factors. The report includes three quarter forecasts for worldwide analog and digital modem shipments.
