Duct Tape
and Burglar Alarms Won't Cut it in Enterprise Security Market
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., October 22, 2001
- As the enterprise continues to fragment and hackers become more
sophisticated, ensuring network security within a business is becoming
an increasingly demanding task, according to Cahners In-Stat Group
(http://www.instat.com). As
a result, enterprises will continue to spend money to protect their
assets, contributing to healthy growth in the enterprise security
market. "Even prior to September's attacks, the overall security
market was experiencing healthy growth, especially in comparison
to other networking equipment and software markets," says Gemma
Paulo, an Analyst with the
high tech market research firm. "The security hardware and software
market is not big enough to be affected by the economic downturn,"
continues Jaclynn
Bumback, also with In-Stat.
"Furthermore, the increasing paranoia among businesses since September
has compelled companies to take a more serious approach to securing
the enterprise network."
In-Stat has also found that:
- Virtual Private Network (VPN) firewalls
are one of the fastest growing segments of the enterprise security
market, with end-use revenues expected to reach $2.9 billion by
2005. Top vendors in this market include SonicWall, WatchGuard,
and NetScreen. Cisco and Nokia, are also key players.
- Enterprises face several layers
of danger from attacks that come from outside the network, and
increasingly, attacks that come from within (posed by the increasing
numbers of business partners on extranets, telecommuters and remote
branch office locations). In addition, more types of wireless
access nodes are being deployed in company networks, such as Personal
Digital Assistants (PDAs), RIM Blackberry devices and wireless
Local Area Network (LAN) equipment, etc.
