SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., October 9, 2001 - While it is not forecast to see the wild aberrations of the past two years, the SRAM (Static Random Access Memory) market will continue the slow decline that started in the mid-nineties, according to Cahners In-Stat Group (http://www.instat.com). The market research firm projects that, as a consequence of current economic conditions and the general trend of the market, worldwide SRAM dollar shipments will fall from $6,512 million last year to $4,006 million by 2005.

“The biggest factor contributing to the decline is an ongoing migration from SRAM to embedded SRAM in high complexity, customer-specific, or ASIC applications as well as application-specific standard product (ASSP) designs,” says Jerry Worchel, a Senior Analyst at In-Stat. “Add the sagging economy that has been affecting all memory products to that trend, and the market is unlikely to stabilize for another 8 to 12 months.”

In-Stat has also found that:

  • Static RAM market worldwide dollar shipments will be dominated by the asynchronous SRAM segment, averaging a 50%+ market share between 2000 and 2005. Asynchronous SRAM unit shipments will likewise dominate, accounting for an average 65% market share over the forecast period.
  • End-use market consumption, once dominated by electronic data processing applications, is now controlled by the communications market, with an average dollar market share of 80% throughout the forecast period.
  • Geographic consumption of SRAM products will remain under the control of The Americas, with Japan and Europe at a somewhat distant second and third. Market share for The Americas will average about 40%+ over the forecast period..

The report, “Market Update: MOS Static RAMs“, (#SI0111MF) examines, discusses and forecasts various key market indicators and trends in the MOS (Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Static RAM market. Discussions include the relationship between the MOS static RAM and total memory markets; definition and detailed examination of worldwide dollar shipments, unit shipments and ASP for the three major technology components of the MOS static RAM market, the Synchronous and Asynchronous static RAM markets, by density and speed, and the Specialty static RAM market by architecture and end-use consumption by the six end-use markets defined by the SIA, as well as down to second-level end-use markets.
