PCI Express Now Virtually Universal In All PCs, x86 Servers Reports InStat
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., February 26, 2007 -
PCI Express has had rapid adoption in the personal computer (PC) and server spaces, and for all intents and purposes, is now universal in all PCs and x86 architected servers, reports In-Stat (http://www.in-stat.com). PCI Express is the next evolution from PCI, the high-tech market research firm says. While PCI was a highly efficient, but limited, point-to-point interconnection, PCI Express allowed for serial interconnections, higher throughputs, and more efficient management of several peripheral options off of the south bridge of PC chipsets.
“As IP becomes available, PCI Express is finding its way onto communications boards and other embedded applications,” says Chris Kissel, In-Stat analyst. “PCI Express is showing its versatility as an interconnection for computation, imagery, and as an interconnection that can be switched or bridged for greater efficiency.”
Recent research by In-Stat found the following:
By 2010, PCI Express will be in 440.2 million devices.
PCI Express was used in 17 million communications boards in 2006, and will be used in 37.2 million boards in 2010.
In consumer electronics, PCI and PCIe adoptions are rare and will continue to be.
Recent In-Stat research, PCI Express, the Journey to 2.0 (#IN0703260MI), covers the market for PCI Express in numerous applications. It catalogs all major product announcements involving PCI Express from May 2006 to December 2006. The research examines the improvements that allow PCI Express 2.0 to increase frequency from 2.5GHz to 5GHz. It also includes a forecast of PCI Express used by devices and vertical markets from 2004–2010.
