Intrusion Detection and Intrusion Prevention Markets Alive and Kicking

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., November 14, 2003 - According to In-Stat/MDR (http://www.instat.com), the overall intrusion detection and prevention (IDP) market is poised to reach $1.3 billion by 2007. A key growth area in network security, the Intrusion Detection System (IDS)/ Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) market is finally receiving the attention that it has long desired. Network-based IDS/IPS appliances will lead this growth, while network-based IDS/IPS software will grow minimally.

Application Layer Security, Intrusion Detection, and Intrusion Prevention have had a common fight in the past several months. These three technologies have had to prove to the world that they are, in fact, needed, and distinct from one another. The incumbents in the market are the Intrusion Detection System (IDS) vendors, who are being criticized for finding incoming attacks but not reacting to those attacks. A new breed of vendors has come to the market to say that IDSs are dead, and are being replaced with Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPSs).  In comparison, IPSs can be placed in-line and stop attacks as they make their way into the networks.  Also competing with the IPS vendors are the application layer firewall vendors that argue that it is the job of the firewall, not the IDS or IPS to block attacks.

Currently, the majority of companies that have an intrusion appliance, have an IDS which watches and analyzes traffic through the network. However, as IDSs become faster, and more reliable (fewer false positives), it will be possible to install these appliances in-line without causing network performance issues, blurring the line between IDS products and IPS products.

In-Stat/MDR has also found that:

  • Larger companies, especially in highly regulated industries such as financial, government, and healthcare, will need to continually be aware of security breaches, and will require security event data provided by IDS products. However, as early adopters to security technologies, these companies will likely deploy in-line IPSs, in addition to their IDSs.
  • A recent survey performed by In-Stat/MDR discovered that network-IDS was the top security device type planned for purchase. This is optimistic, as the confusion in the market between IDS, IPS, and application layer filtering has caused many companies to wait out the debate for a true winner.
  • Intrusion Detection and Prevention technologies are being offered from vendors with backgrounds in IDS and firewall/VPNs, in addition to start-ups focused primarily on this market. In-Stat/MDR has identified over 25 vendors competing in the IDS, IPS, and application security market.

Recent In-Stat research, Application Layer Security: Intrusion Detection and Prevention (#IN030810LN), examines the players in the application layer security industry, with a focus on the network Intrusion Detection and Intrusion Prevention markets, including five year forecasts for network IDS and IPS, and host IDS.
