Wi-Fi – Where’s the Money?

In 2006 more than 200 million Wi-Fi chipsets shipped into everything from Mobile PCs (37% of total) to portable CE devices. Although only 3% of those chips went into dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi handsets, In-Stat believes that this is the breakout market segment, accounting for 20% of all chipset shipments by 2009. In fact, between 2007 and 2011, strong growth for Wi-Fi chipsets will come as a result of portable connectivity applications.

But where are the opportunities best suited for your products? Whether your company provides Wi-Fi chipsets, Wi-Fi technology or Wi-Fi device and equipment, this research package provides product marketing and strategic managers with the critical information needed to successfully target specific high-growth market opportunities. Recent In-Stat research in this space finds:

  • From less than 6 million units in 2006, combo handsets will reach nearly 190 million by 2011.
  • The top mobile applications for Wi-Fi chipsets over In-Stat’s forecast period will be embedded in mobile PCs, combo Wi-Fi/cellular handsets, and mobile CE devices.
  • Wi-Fi Mesh AP unit shipments are set to grow by more than 90% in 2007, with a slowing pace in growth during the latter years of In-Stat’s forecast due to a variety of factors.
  • After laptops, dual mode Wi-Fi/Cellular phones and handheld gaming devices were the most common survey responses given for devices used to connect to a hotspot.
  • US service revenues are forecasted to decline starting in 2010 due to WiMAX and continued growth of free services.
