Abstract
In November 2002, Microsoft and its hardware partners introduced the Tablet PC, a fully functional portable PC with digitizer that allows pen input, and runs on Microsoft’s Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system. Aimed at both horizontal and vertical markets, the device was designed to counteract sluggish commercial PC sales.

So far, the effort has been only partly successful. Vertical markets, such as health care, real estate, and insurance have adopted Tablet PCs. However, horizontal commercial markets have been somewhat hesitant to adopt a new PC form factor in a world of slow-growing IT budgets. New software and hardware has been released over the past year in an attempt to invigorate the market.

This report contains five-year unit shipment and revenue forecasts for Tablet PCs. It also contains a five-year forecast for the regional breakdown of Tablet PC shipments. Extensive analysis of Tablet PCs in both horizontal and vertical markets is included, as well as the potential of Tablet PCs in the consumer segment. Also included are profiles of some of the markets’ leading players, including Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Toshiba, Acer, Motion Computing, ViewSonic and Fujitsu.
