Digital Visual Interface (DVI) is a specification
originally developed to digitally connect PCs to flat panel monitors. PCs, PC
peripherals and consumer electronics have been the primary product segments for
DVI.
Lately, a successor to DVI, High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)
is gaining popularity in the Consumer Electronics (CE) market. Backwards compatible
with DVI, HDMI was developed principally by major CE vendors, and adds audio support
and a smaller connector to the DVI spec. It is in the process of overtaking DVI
in CE products, including digital televisions, set top boxes and DVD players.
