Abstract
In-Stat/MDR’s sixth annual survey of fifty US Cable TV system operators shows that total Cable TV subscriber growth is flattening out, and long-term revenue gains are contingent upon the introduction of, and expansion of, new digital video, data, and voice services.
Most respondents reported that penetration of their Digital Cable TV services is currently between 20% and up to 39%. Cable operators believe that they can eventually achieve 50%, or higher, “take rates” for their ever-expanding menu of digital services.
High Definition TV (HDTV) is more widely available than Video-On-Demand (VOD) services. Personal Video Recorder (PVR) services are also experiencing fast-growth. Twenty-nine respondents plan to be providing HDTV, twenty-two plan to be offering VOD, and nineteen plan to be offering PVR services within 12 months.
CableLabs developed the CableCARD specification to enable a device to decode encrypted, or scrambled, “content” delivered from Cable TV systems. Seven respondents reported that they plan to support CableCARD devices on their systems within the next 12 months, indicating industry awareness and emerging plans to use CableCARD products.
