| 1Q 2004 Broadband CPE Market Analysis |
 |
In 1Q 04, DSL standalone modem unit shipments decreased
15% from 4Q03, on the heels of a very healthy year for DSL modem shipments in
2003. Overall, the cable modem market increased by 12% in 1Q04, compared to 4Q03.
SOHO router shipments decreased by 4% over the first quarter of 2004, with
3.7 million units shipping out in 1Q04. 2003 saw a 140% growth in SOHO router
shipments compared to 2002, with 12.7 million SOHO routers shipping out over the
course of 2003. Both wired and wireless routers are included in this segment,
and wireless routers continue to increase in shipments, both in 802.11b and 802.11g.
The Residential Gateway (RG) market continued its strong growth in 1Q04,
at 50%. The RG market really exploded in the second half of 2003, as 1.6 million
RG units shipped out in 2H 2003, driving annual unit shipments to 2.3 million.
In-Stat/MDR expects this RG market to experience healthy growth throughout 2004,
as end-users appreciate the simplicity of the all-in-one network that an RG device
offers, and prices continue to fall. |
