Abstract
Worldwide, wireless subscriber growth is experiencing robust expansion, after several years of slower growth, due to the economic downturn of the last few years. By 2009, In-Stat/MDR forecasts the worldwide wireless market will grow to more than 2.5 billion subscribers. Through 2007 GSM will see steady growth as it expands its worldwide footprint and as customers continue to migrate from older airlink technology. However, from 2008 GSM growth will begin to decline as operators move subscribers to WCDMA. While GSM (including GPRS & EDGE) will remain the dominant airlink throughout most of the forecast, CDMA airlink standards (CDMA & WCDMA) will pass GSM in 2009 to claim the largest share of the market, in terms of number of subscribers.
