Abstract
This report presents five-year spending forecasts for overall IT spending in the enterprise market. Forecasts for overall spending and for the six broad spending categories of computer hardware, applications, network hardware, telecom services and equipment, IT personnel, and outsourcing and hosted services are presented and broken down by size of business. Data on perceptions of the US economy and performance of respondents’ firms in 2003 and expectations for 2004 is analyzed in this report, along with data on factors affecting IT spending. The research also includes data on the channels used by customers in this market for various kinds of IT purchases, as well as influential information sources for such purchases.

With the outlook for the economy and their individual businesses looking bright, enterprise information technology decision-makers are likely to increase investments in technology in 2004. However, the focus of these investments is expected to revolve around improving the businesses ability to connect remote and mobile workers to needed resources, efficiently and securely. In the long-term, “virtualization of the enterprise” – where individuals can work where and when they want to without sacrificing security or productivity is likely to drive this market’s IT investments. This suggests that the vendors targeting these customers will have an even more complex sale on their hands, and will need partners more than ever.
