Abstract
This report provides size of business and vertical industry perspectives of market statistics on the number of firms and employees in the SOHO business market. The research also provides data on the primary work environments of employees in this market, including the number of telecommuters, Internet-accessing telecommuters, and remote branch offices. Detailed five-year forecasts are included for all SOHO business demographics, along with a discussion of current market trends.

Firms in the SOHO business market (<5 employees), along with their small business (5 to 99 employees) brethren, are generally considered to be the “leading indicators” for the US business economy. Smaller firms are the first to feel the pinch of a shrinking economy and the first to thrive in an improving climate. As such, it is not surprising that the number of SOHO businesses is expected to grow faster than overall firm growth in the US. This market is expected to grow to more than 8.4 million firms by year’s end, employing nearly 18 million workers. Over the next several years, this market should show steady growth, and is expected to reach more than 9.3 million businesses and 19 million employees by 2008.
