Abstract
The SOHO business market is massive in scale, but not necessarily in scope – in terms of IT requirements. These firms are evolving technologically, but are expected to focus on filling in the “gaps” in their IT infrastructures, be that improving security, adding more bandwidth or installing a network, in 2004. However, with their perceptions of economic and business performance for 2004 quite positive, this market is expected to spend more this year, which should make them a bit more attractive to IT vendors. Though this is not a massive market, in terms of technology spending, it is an interesting opportunity worthy of focus and attention.

This report presents five-year spending forecasts for overall IT spending in the SOHO business market. Forecasts for overall spending and for the six broad spending categories of computer hardware, applications, network hardware, telecom services and equipment, IT personnel, and outsourcing and hosted services are presented and broken down by size of business. Data on perceptions of the US economy and performance of respondents’ firms in 2003, and expectations for 2004, is analyzed in this report, along with data on factors affecting IT spending. The research also includes data on the channels used by customers in this market for various kinds of IT purchases, as well as influential information sources for such purchases.
