Key technologies from varying broadband access product
segments are converging. Products such as access routers, Ethernet switches, firewall
security appliances, Integrated Access Devices (IADs), Voice-over Internet Protocol
(VoIP) gateways and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) access points are all beginning
to look alike. Over the next 12-24 months, In-Stat/MDR anticipates a new breed
of multi-service devices will emerge. Designed to support multi-services from
the ground up, these devices will form a new product segment that In-Stat/MDR
calls the “Business Gateway.”
The Business Gateway will be a modular, standards-based device, offering
“office-in-a-box” voice and data solutions for small businesses and enterprise
branch offices. In-Stat/MDR forecasts the Business Gateway market to grow from
$1.2 billion in 2004 to $16.6 billion in 2008. In the process, turning the networking
equipment industry upside down.
