Abstract
This report presents a detailed analysis of the 8-bit embedded microprocessors (eMPU), cell-based, customer-specific market, i.e., custom designs that include at least one pre-defined 8-bit microprocessor core, along with other functions, using the cell-based design methodology. The 8-bit embedded architecture is currently the second largest end-use market for this technology, at least at the current time, based on worldwide revenues of $749.3 million last year. In spite of the age of the market and technology, it will fair well, ending the forecast period higher than it began at $793.1 million. This translates to a compound annual growth rate, 2003-2008, of 1.1%. However, applications for embedded 8-bit technology are vastly different than wider bus width processors.
 
 Consumption of products incorporating 8-bit eMPU technology is examined in detail by major end-use market; electronic data processing, communications, consumer, industrial, and military/automotive, as well as by major second-level end-use application, such as networks, basestations, servers, factory automation, electronic games and toys, etc., for the major market segments. Geographic consumption for each of the four major regions, The Americas, Europe, Japan and Asia Pacific is also explored, as are processor architecture (ARM, proprietary, etc.), hard- vs. soft-core, operating voltage, packaging, and mixed-signal trends, along with suppliers of 8-bit eMPU cores, be they IDMs or independent IP providers
