| State of the Industry: Government |
 |
This report provides current and forecast demographic
data such as number of employees and number of firms for the government vertical
including those at the federal, state, and local levels. This information is also
broken down by size of government business such as SOHO, Small Business, Middle-Market,
and Enterprise. Government segments such as federal, state, and local are also
detailed in the study, along with market trends, technology trends, applications
driving spending, and the overall opportunities for technology vendors in the
government vertical.
While the federal government is starting to see more promising signs of
a recovery, the state and local government sectors remain optimistic but are maintaining
very conservative spending and utilizing a number of ways to cut expenditures.
In fact, while the US GDP grew by 4% in the 4th quarter of 2003, the majority
of states are slowly seeing growth and are expecting the same, or slightly higher
spending in 2004. Many states have initiated across the board percentage cuts,
and some have also cut K-12 and higher education spending just to maintain the
previous year’s budget. Technology investment is also feeling the brunt of the
economic challenges, and is being seen more as a way to cut costs and streamline
government processes.
