| Telefonica Moviles Operator Profile |
 |
Spain’s Telefónica is the world’s fifth largest mobile
operator, as measured by the number of subscribers it has worldwide, and is one
of the most internationally focused, with more customers outside of its home market,
than within it. It has made its goal to become, and currently is, the leading
provider of wireless services for the Spanish and Portuguese speaking world. In
the first quarter of 2004, Telefónica cemented its already strong position in
Latin America through the purchase of BellSouth’s entire South, Central, and Caribbean
wireless properties, for $5.85 billion.
Telefónica already dominates nearly every market that it operates in, and
through organic growth, partnerships, and acquisition, it intends to conquer the
rest of the Hispanic world. Telefónica’s interests include wireline, wireless,
and broadband Internet services, and it relies on a innovative mix of the services
to support its worldwide ambitions. |
