Abstract
High-definition television offers the viewer a remarkable improvement in both visual and audio quality. In fact, most industry observers would agree that the enhanced viewing experience of HDTV is unquestionably superior to anything previously known. At the same time, it is important to realize that we are still in the early stages of the transition from the tried-and-true world of analog television to a digital and high-definition TV world.

This report examines the availability of high-definition television services around the world. It covers market and industry drivers for HDTV service subscribers and viewers, and discusses how the availability of HD programming and the development of different HD business models are impacting the market for HDTV services.

The report also takes an in-depth look at existing HDTV service providers, and provides the results of a US consumer survey about the use of, and knowledge of, HDTV services. It provides five-year forecasts for worldwide HDTV households by transmission platform (satellite, cable, and terrestrial), worldwide HDTV households by geographic region, US HDTV households, and the installed base of US HDTV sets.
