| DVD Players, Recorders, and the
Next Generation |
 |
Though DVD recorders are readily
available and prices are coming down, consumers are still purchasing
DVD players in large quantities. Japan is the only market where
DVD recorder shipments have overtaken that of DVD players.
The two next generation blue laser formats, Blu-ray and
HD-DVD, are finalizing specs. HD-DVD players and content will
be out by the end of 2005, while Blu-ray recorders are already
shipping in Japan. No clear winner is emerging, but our expectations
are discussed.
The report contains 5-year forecasts for worldwide DVD
players by region, DVD recorders by region, DVD players by type,
DVD recorders with hard drives, DVD recorders with DTV tuners,
next-generation DVD players and recorders, DVD player bill of
materials and DVD recorder BOMs. Data from our web-survey regarding
US consumers interest in DVD recorders is also presented.
